A true Canadian establishment filled with warmth and character, the Black Dog features the very best in quality, local foods prepared with simplicity and style. We have more than 20 unique draught beers, and a great selection of bottled beers, each featuring local, regional and international brews. Our beverage selection is rounded out with an award-winning wine list and an impressive collection of single malt whisky, bourbon and Irish whiskey.
For well over 10 years, Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh and Ted McIntosh have owned and operated the popular Black Dog Village Pub & Bistro in Bayfield. Kathleen is a published author of nine cookbooks and has been a contributing writer to many newspapers and magazines. Ted is a graduate sommelier and beverage specialist with a passion for good beer, wine and spirits. Their enthusiasm and passion for good food and good drink is what makes the Black Dog a favourite of both locals and visitors to Huron County.
Think globally, eat locally.
With our collective family roots firmly planted in England, Ireland and Scotland, it is no surprise that our seasonal menus have been inspired by the memorable gastro pubs that we have visited in the U.K. We strive to bring that culinary philosophy to our seasonal lunch and dinner menus at the Black Dog featuring as many local foods as we are able to source including meat, fish, cheese and produce, all prepared with simplicity, style and a bit of ethnicity and served within the framework of a local village pub.
The Black Dog is all about true taste and big flavour, a philosophy that is reinforced on a daily basis.
Logically, our menus change seasonally and provide a hint as to our Toronto roots with the nods to various ethnic influences we strive to include. With few exceptions, everything we serve is made in our kitchen, including our fantastic soups, accompanying bread, renowned burgers, vinaigrettes, sauces, chutneys, daily specials and creative desserts.
The consummate host, Ted McIntosh has been involved in the hospitality industry in many capacities for more than 35 years. A longtime wine and spirits enthusiast, and a passionate quality beer lover, Ted has worked for two breweries, a winery and imported single malts into Canada. Ted is also a graduate sommelier with a very comprehensive understanding of Ontario VQA wines in particular. No surprise then that the pub has been the recipient of the VQA Wine Award each year since it opened. Ted's passion for single malts and Irish whiskies is demonstrated in the breadth and length of the pub's scotch and whisky list. It is not unusual to see Ted decked out in his kilt of magnificent McIntosh tartan and accompanying regalia conducting a scotch nosing for a table of guests
In excess of 20 beers on tap is no small achievement especially since a number of the beers that we sourced may only have been available to us if we actually took to the road and fetched them ourselves – which we have done in the past and continue to do when necessary. Ask for a sample of any of our draught beers. It’s a great way to discover a new favourite. As is our annual beer festival, OctoBEER, when all of our beer and cider reps are on hand to provide samples and chat with beer lovers. Join our email subscriber list to receive first hand news of upcoming events.
